The celebration starts from when ancient Buddhism had spread through numerous cultures including the Bon religion of Tibet. Resulting in the evolution of Sonam Losar. It deeply roots in the Lunar calendar according to agricultural harvest throughout the year. It Mark’s the new start each year with an animal from the 12-year lunar cycle.
On this occasion, the house is cleaned and families gather together to eat delicious meals including sel roti, yak meat as well as other delicacies. People also worship and give offerings in monasteries, stupas in order to bring abundance and fortune in their lives. It is celebrated according to the lunar calendar which usually occurs in late January or February. In Nepal, the Tamang community celebrate this festival wearing their traditional colourful dress and dancing to their cultural songs.i.e. Tamang Selo, Chyabrung along with the Dhampu. In places such as Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, it is quite busy on this day.
In conclusion, Sonam Losar is a new beginning which can be celebrated by everyone bringing unity and harmony to our communities, inspiring younger generations to continue such traditions.
