On the occasion of National Paddy Day, we the students of Grade Seven from Golden Peak High School went to Tribhuvan University, Kritipur for paddy plantation. Most of us had never planted paddy so we were very excited for this new experience. We arrived at school all stoked and left at 10.00 a.m. by bus. Once we got there, we stayed in the garden watching flowers and herbal plants for a while. Soon we got to meet honorable Forest Minster Mr. Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri.
It was already 12.00 p.m. and we changed our outfits for planting paddy. We learned to plant paddy from our teachers. Then we stayed in a group and planted paddy together. We learned how to do proper spacing and hilling, something we never did before. We got the paddy plant from farmers from the next field. Most of the boys were leveling the mud with some tools. We all enjoyed staying in the field and working together. We also played with the mud and all of us were covered with mud from head to toe. We got tired and changed our outfit again to come back to school. But before that, we ate some food and came back watching the rain. Lastly, after going back to school, we gathered up in our classroom and went home.
Through this experience we got to learn a lot about traditional farming. We got to interact with local farmers. They were really nice and friendly and they taught us really well. We’ve got to appreciate the work of farmers first hand. Now we hope the rice we planted grows well and feeds lots of people.
