A sport is an activity that basically involves physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against the other for entertainment. Sports are generally recognized as a system of activities based on physical dexterity, with major competitions held such as Olympic games. According to the World Sports Encyclopedia (2003), there are 8,000 indigenous sports and sporting games. Football (Soccer) is the most popular sports in the world, with an estimated following 4 billion fans. Cricket is the second popular sports with 2.5 billion fans and third Hockey which have 2 billion fans.

The history of the sports goes back at least 3,000 years. In the beginning, it was related to military training. Team sports were used to train and to enable the combatants to fight their best and they were also the integral part of training to inculcate discipline and collective spirit in them. Team Sports often involved the preparation for the war or training as a hunter, which explains so many early games involved the throwing of spears, stakes, and rocks, and sparring one-on-one with opponents. The history of sport can teach us about social changes and about the nature of sports itself, as seems to have involved in the development of basic human skills.

Sports are very essential for every student life which keeps us fit and physically sound. Playing sports teaches lessons of life, such as teamwork, punctuality, patience, accountability, self-confidence, responsibility, and self-discipline. Sports help to shape physical and mental abilities of students and also help them achieve the goals of their life. Being involved in sports activities benefits a person providing not only physical strength but also constantly activating one’s brain cells and neurons hence, releasing multiple good chemicals and making us creative and positive. Outdoor sports such as football, volleyball, cricket, running, etc. helps in improving physical health as well as mental fitness. However, some indoor games and sports like brain games, chess, Sudoku, etc. improve mental power and concentration level.

Games can be dangerous, because any injury can occur while playing these sports. We should do few minutes warm-up exercise or take a light jog to get loosened up and ready to play. We should be well familiar about rules of the games. We should take a rest if we’ve injured rather than play. We should use safety equipment include such item as goggles, mouth guards, shin-elbow-knee pad, and helmets.

Sports activities have been made compulsory in the school and colleges for the student’s good physical health, mental health and professional career. Sports hold a bright career in future for anyone who gets involved in with a sheer dedication and devotion. Students who are genuinely passionate about any particular sport are likely to live a long and healthy life and they can also turn their passion into a promising profession as well. They can also cultivate discipline and leadership qualities at the workplace as well.
